Weissensee Today
Berlin's Weißensee is home to 57,552 people (as of December 2024) in the Pankow district, just 4 km northeast of the city center. It's a Friday in mid-May, the lilacs are out around the Weißer See, and right now it feels like everything is happening at once — the hospital just filed for insolvency, the schools are bursting, rents are absurd, and there's talk (again) of a U-Bahn that never quite arrives. Here's what's actually going on, from someone who lives in the middle of it.
🏞️ The Lake Now Has a Hedge
The Weißer See's transformation is complete. A 925-metre-long deadwood hedge (Totholzhecke) has been installed along the shore — not as decoration, but as a barrier. After years of delays (funding from the BBSR only arrived in summer 2025), the €2 million project was finished just in time for spring. Fourteen people have drowned here in the last decade, most during illegal night swims after the Strandbad closes. The hedge won't stop everyone, but you can walk the shore now and see it in place.
The Strandbad Weißensee itself almost didn't make it. A property-tax reassessment threatened to hike the bill by up to 5,000 %. Negotiations brought the increase down, but entry prices still went up. The season opened on time — and Berliners kept coming, which might be the most Berlin thing of all.
The Milchhäuschen Café, that 1913 dairy kiosk turned lakeside institution, remains closed. Locals are watching.
🏥 The Hospital That Fell
This is the big one this month. The Park-Klinik Weißensee — a 350-bed hospital with 770 employees, ten departments, treating 17,000 patients and handling 26,000 emergency cases every year — has filed for insolvency. Its sister facility, the Schlosspark-Klinik in Charlottenburg, is largely closing. The Schön Klinik group has emerged as a potential buyer, with negotiations underway.
For a locality this size, losing the Park-Klinik would be catastrophic. The emergency room alone serves thousands. For now, the doors are still open. The Späti on Berliner Allee that the hospital kicked out during the dispute? That lease battle is over too — the shop operator was forced out.
🚋 Berlin's Biggest Transit Gap
Weißensee remains the largest locality in Berlin without an S-Bahn or U-Bahn station inside its borders. The story goes that in 1929, plans existed to extend the U5 line here. Tracks were even laid at Alexanderplatz. Then the project stalled in 1935 — and the village church (the Dorfkirche Weißensee, a late Gothic fieldstone tower from the 14th century) was spared. Almost a century later, we're still waiting.
What's happening now:
- A new tram tangent linking Pankow, Heinersdorf, and Weißensee is in planning. It faces "dependencies in all sections," according to district planners.
- The U10 extension is being discussed — again. Senator Schreiner is pushing for a feasibility study.
- The Composers' Quarter (Komponistenviertel) Kiezblock — a one-way system that killed the rat-running — launched with chaos (Staus, Geisterfahrer, the works) but locals now call it a win. Google Maps eventually updated to accept it as a no-go zone for non-local traffic. Further Kiezblock projects in Pankow and Weißensee remain stalled, caught between a CDU-led Senate blocking new Kiezblocks and a Green-led district pushing ahead.
- A bicycle street was introduced in the Composers' Quarter in 2023. Cycling infrastructure elsewhere? Still patchy — the Pankow transport authority has 622 open cases causing months-long delays.
⚠️ Heads up: The BVG will tear up key tram lines M1 and M12 in Pankow in 2026, causing major disruptions. Replacement services are expected to be chaotic.
Meanwhile, two 11-year-old girls from Weißensee spoke out this spring about feeling unsafe in traffic — particularly along Berliner Allee — calling for better protection for children. When kids have to campaign for safe streets, something is broken.
For now, the tram network — MetroTram M4, M13, and lines 12 and 27 — does the heavy lifting. Everyone else heads to the Ringbahn at Greifswalder Straße.
🏗️ Housing — The Price of Staying
The rental market is brutal. Listings have hit €21/m² cold rent — numbers that make even Prenzlauer Berg look reasonable. A Milieuschutzgebiet (preservation area) around the Weißer See, which would cover over 23,000 households, has been discussed but held up by legal concerns described as containing "juristischen Sprengstoff" (legal dynamite).
Major developments are stuck in limbo:
- Pankower Tor promises thousands of apartments but faces huge hurdles.
- A half-finished concrete shell on Berliner Allee has been rotting for years — its completion is tangled up with tram planning decisions.
- Construction sites on Falkenberger Straße and Schönstraße drag on — some over six years. Neighbours are fed up.
- An abandoned plot at Roelckestraße 13 — approved for development in 2016 — has become an open dump after the developer went bankrupt.
- The Langhanskiez is getting a €65 million redevelopment, and residents are being asked what they want. That's something, at least.
🏫 Schools — Over Capacity, Under Construction
The Primo-Levi-Gymnasium is one of Berlin's most oversubscribed schools. Students with a 1.2 grade average have been turned away. A major renovation and expansion is planned — which means a temporary relocation for the whole school. The district has now provided clarity on where students will go during the rebuild.
The former Children's Hospital (Kinderkrankenhaus Weißensee) — built 1909–1911, closed 1997, a listed lost place for nearly 30 years — is slated for conversion into a gymnasium. Pankow is moving forward despite the enormous costs, after alternative plans fell through. After decades of decay and legal disputes, that would be a remarkable second life.
Other school sites are struggling too:
- The Grundschule am Weißen See has been a construction site for eight years, forcing students into inadequate temporary quarters. Completion has been postponed again — most recently in April 2026.
- At the Heinz-Brandt-Schule, ten 100-year-old trees were felled for an extension, sparking outrage after years of protests. Pankow's balance sheet shows more trees are being destroyed than planted across the district.
- The Rennbahnstraße school — a €67 million new build — has suffered repeated water damage and heating failures. Most recently, the heating system gave out entirely in January 2026.
Pankow is projected to lack seven secondary schools by 2040 due to population growth. The numbers don't lie.
🎭 Culture — Holding Together on Less
Berlin's austerity cuts have hit everywhere, but Weißensee's scene is stubborn:
- The Theater im Delphi — a former silent-movie cinema that became the Moka Efti set in Babylon Berlin — is still packing houses and hosting film crews. Its ballet production of Swan Lake drew crowds last October.
- The Brotfabrik (a former bakery turned cultural hub) secured critical funding after months of uncertainty — the director says the "worst cuts have been averted."
- The Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee marked its 80th anniversary this spring. Founded in 1946 as the "Kunstschule des Nordens," it now hosts over 835 students across 11 disciplines, rooted in Bauhaus tradition. But the anniversary came with alarms: the president warned the institution's reputation was "acutely threatened" by Berlin's budget squeeze, calling the upcoming state election on 20 September a critical juncture. The open day drew crowds anyway — Weißensee shows up for its art school.
- The FreiZeitHaus Weißensee marked 35 years — with "reasons explicitly not to celebrate," its director said.
- The Blumenfest, every third weekend of June since 1963, is still the summer event everyone marks on their calendar. It's coming up next month.
- A proposal to create a hologram of Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer as a new form of remembrance is being discussed in Pankow. It would be a first for Berlin.
🎬 From Caligari to Babylon Berlin
Long before Netflix, Weißensee was a silent-film powerhouse. Between 1913 and 1929, local studios produced Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari and a string of other classics. Seven cinemas once surrounded Antonplatz. Only one survives: Kino Toni, opened 1920, now owned by director Michael Verhoeven with two screens. The Theater im Delphi carries the legacy — still standing, still screening, still a film location that has attracted directors from Quentin Tarantino to Tom Tykwer.
🧱 Lost & Found
Some of the most interesting spaces in Weißensee are the ones time forgot, and the ones being reimagined.
The Rennbahn Weißensee was Berlin's first harness-racing track, opened 1878. Bruce Springsteen played there in July 1988 — estimates range from 160,000 to 300,000 people. The Rolling Stones came in 1990. Today it's sports fields. No plaque marks the Boss's show.
The Bethanienkirche, a ruin on Mirbachplatz, is being redeveloped into housing under preservation orders.
The former Stasi indoor shooting range on Neumagener Straße — a weapons depot that stored the GDR's explosive legacy — still stands. So does the VEB Isokond factory site, where an insider's warning prevented an environmental catastrophe in the 1980s. These places don't make the brochure. They're part of what Weißensee actually is.
👤 Living History
Bertolt Brecht lived at Berliner Allee 185 from 1949 to 1953 — a classicist villa not far from the lake. The housing estate on Buschallee, designed by Bruno Taut between 1928 and 1930, is a kilometre-long masterpiece of Neues Bauen. The Holländer-Quartier (1925–1929) looks like it belongs in Potsdam — red clinker brick, Dutch gables — but has no Dutch connection at all. It's Weißensee: borrowing from everywhere, becoming itself.
⚠️ What's Happened Lately
It hasn't all been construction and culture. Here's what's been happening on the ground:
- An ATM was blown up in an Edeka on Pistoriusstraße — significant property damage, the market closed temporarily.
- A 44-year-old van driver was shot dead — police investigate possible blood revenge linked to organized crime, reportedly over a property dispute in Turkey.
- A fire in a refugee shelter left two people seriously injured.
- A multi-family home on Smetanastraße burned; 50 firefighters responded.
- A pedestrian was hit by a tram at a crosswalk and seriously injured.
- A 10-year-old child was hit by a tram at Berliner Allee/Parkstraße, sustaining life-threatening head injuries; later reported out of danger.
- A 17-year-old on an e-scooter was hit by a tram and dragged.
- A 25-year-old woman was struck by a tram after reportedly crossing against a red light.
- Police identified the truck driver who fatally struck an 85-year-old woman and fled.
- A deceased woman was discovered in a burned apartment on Sulzfelder Straße — firefighters contained the blaze, but she is believed to have died from smoke inhalation.
Also this spring: police responded to a radio call reporting an "alligator in the water" at a Weißensee pond, drawing crowds of onlookers. It was a false alarm. That's the kind of headline you don't get in Prenzlauer Berg.
👩 Local Voices
Silke Agger, a Weißensee woman, shared her story of breast cancer survival and radical preventative mastectomy — speaking out because, as she put it: "I didn't want to die like my mother." It's the kind of story that doesn't make the news cycle but stays with you, and it deserves to be part of what we know about this place.

Weißer See – Shore Renaturation and Swimming Ban
Timeframe: 2023–May 2026
Renaturation at Weißer See is now largely complete. After years of debate, a 925-meter-long deadwood hedge has been erected at a cost of €2 million to protect the shoreline and prevent dangerous illegal swimming. The barrier is now in place, effectively walling off the shore. Over the past ten years, 14 swimmers have died at Weißer See. The Strandbad Weißensee (lido) remains open as the only legal swimming spot, though entry fees have been raised after a massive property tax hike that temporarily pushed the lido to the brink of ruin. After negotiations, the increase was somewhat reduced but still significant.
The hedge construction was prepared in spring 2025 and finally completed by May 2026, ending a long history of delays and planning disputes. Earlier attempts at temporary barriers — reeds, wire, and walls — had proven insufficient. For years the project was delayed by funding issues — the €1.7 million from the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR) only arrived in early summer 2025, pushing the hedge installation past the 2025 bathing season.

Kiezblock and Transport
Timeframe: 2023–2026
The Komponistenviertel in Weißensee received a "Kiezblock" — a one-way street system designed to block through traffic. The project started chaotically with traffic jams and wrong-way drivers but is now considered a success. Google Maps eventually updated to accept the area as a no-go zone for non-local traffic. Further Kiezblock projects in Pankow and Weißensee remain stalled in planning, with a political standoff between the CDU-led Senate's block on new Kiezblocks and the Green-led district pushing ahead regardless.
A major redevelopment of the Langhanskiez is planned with a €65 million investment, and residents are being asked to contribute ideas. The Pankow transport authority remains in a "dramatic" crisis with 622 open cases — including bicycle streets, Kiezblocks, and construction site permits — causing months-long delays.
A new tram tangent connecting Pankow, Heinersdorf, and Weißensee is in planning to link the growing district to the public transport network. The project faces "dependencies in all sections," according to district planners. An extension of the U-Bahn line U10 to Weißensee continues to be discussed, with Senator Schreiner pushing for a feasibility study.
The BVG will tear up key tram lines M1 and M12 in Pankow in 2026, causing major disruptions with replacement services expected to be chaotic.
Two 11-year-old girls from Weißensee have spoken out about feeling unsafe in traffic, particularly along Berliner Allee, calling for better protection for children.

Construction Projects and Housing Shortage
Timeframe: 2019–2026
Multiple construction sites in Weißensee continue to frustrate residents — including long-running projects on Falkenberger Straße and Schönstraße, some dragging on for over six years. The major Pankower Tor development, set to deliver thousands of new apartments, faces significant hurdles. A half-finished shell at Berliner Allee has been decaying for years; its completion depends on tram planning. Another abandoned plot at Roelckestraße 13 — where ambitious construction plans including a multi-family house and terraced homes were approved in 2016 — has become an open dump with rubbish, construction waste, and abandoned cars after the developer went bankrupt.
Rents in Weißensee have reached new records — cold rents of €21 per square meter have been demanded in some areas. A "milieu protection area" around Weißer See is under discussion, covering over 23,000 households, but a decision remains pending due to legal concerns.
The Park-Klinik Weißensee — a hospital with 350 beds, 770 employees, and 10 departments treating 17,000 patients and handling 26,000 emergency cases annually — filed for insolvency in October 2025. After months of negotiations, the private hospital group Sana is now set to take over the clinic, with the transfer expected on 1 June 2026 pending regulatory approval. Sana already operates a hospital in Lichtenberg; the two facilities together cover more than 42,000 inpatient treatments annually. The hospital's sister facility, the Schlosspark-Klinik in Charlottenburg, is largely closing.
A long-running dispute over a popular Späti on Berliner Allee has seen the shop operator forced out after the hospital terminated his lease.

Schools and Education
Timeframe: 2023–2026
The Primo-Levi-Gymnasium in Weißensee remains one of the most coveted schools in Berlin — even students with a 1.2 grade average have been turned away. The district of Pankow plans an extensive renovation and expansion, requiring a temporary relocation of students. The district has now provided clarity on the move.
The former children's hospital in Weißensee — a lost place for nearly three decades — is slated for conversion into a gymnasium under current plans. Pankow is moving forward despite the enormous costs, after alternative plans fell through. Earlier options had collapsed as financially unviable.
The Grundschule am Weißen See (primary school) has been a perpetual construction site for eight years, forcing students into inadequate temporary quarters. Completion has been postponed yet again — most recently in April 2026.
At the Heinz-Brandt-Schule, ten 100-year-old trees were felled on school grounds for an extension building, sparking outrage among parents and environmentalists after years of protests. Pankow's balance sheet shows more trees are being destroyed than planted across the district.
The Rennbahnstraße school, a €67 million new build, has suffered repeated water damage and heating failures, with a series of technical mishaps plaguing the facility — most recently the heating system gave out in January 2026.
Pankow district is projected to lack seven secondary schools by 2040 due to population growth, placing immense pressure on school placements.

Culture and Social Affairs
Timeframe: 2025–2026
The Theater im Delphi in Weißensee remains a popular filming location and cultural magnet, recently hosting ballet performances of "Swan Lake" (1–5 October 2025). The venue's history as a film location — attracting directors from Quentin Tarantino to Tom Tykwer — was highlighted in the press.
The Brotfabrik Weißensee secured crucial funding after a prolonged struggle with Berlin's austerity budget — the director said the "worst cuts have been averted" though vigilance remains necessary. The Kunsthochschule Weißensee held its open house while lamenting the impact of Berlin's austerity measures — the president warned the institution's reputation was "acutely threatened." After protests and political pressure, the worst cuts were somewhat mitigated, but the president stated a "horror scenario has been slightly alleviated" and called for a more forward-looking cultural policy. In its 80th anniversary year, the institution celebrated its Bauhaus-rooted legacy — founded in 1946 as the "Kunstschule des Nordens" — and now hosts over 835 students across 11 disciplines. However, the Berlin Senate's austerity budget continues to threaten the campus, with the upcoming state election on 20 September seen as a critical juncture.
The FreiZeitHaus Weißensee association celebrated its 35th anniversary but continues to suffer from severe funding cuts. Its director stated there were "reasons explicitly not to celebrate."
A proposal to create a hologram of Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer as a new form of remembrance is being discussed in Pankow.
A local Weißensee woman, Silke Agger, shared her story of breast cancer survival and radical preventative mastectomy, aiming to raise awareness: "I didn't want to die like my mother."

Crime and Emergency Services
Timeframe: 2025–2026
Unknown perpetrators blew up an ATM at an Edeka supermarket on Pistoriusstraße — causing significant property damage and forcing the market to close temporarily. A 44-year-old van driver was shot dead in Weißensee; police are investigating possible blood revenge in the organized crime milieu, reportedly over a property dispute in Turkey. The BZ reported that investigators are looking into "a bloody reckoning in the organized crime milieu" as the motive. A fire at a refugee shelter in Weißensee left two people seriously injured. A multi-family home on Smetanastraße burned — 50 firefighters were deployed.
Several tram-related accidents occurred: A pedestrian was hit and seriously injured by a tram at a crosswalk after reportedly crossing against a red light. A 10-year-old child was hit by a tram at the Berliner Allee/Parkstraße crossing, sustaining life-threatening head injuries including severe cranial trauma; the boy was later reported out of danger. A 17-year-old on an e-scooter was hit by a tram and dragged along. A 25-year-old woman was also struck by a tram after reportedly crossing against a red light.
The truck driver who fatally struck an 85-year-old woman in Weißensee and fled the scene has been identified by police.
A curious police operation was triggered by a radio call reporting an "alligator in the water" at a Weißensee pond, drawing crowds — which turned out to be a false alarm.
Most recently, firefighters responding to an apartment fire at Sulzfelder Straße discovered a deceased woman in the burned unit; the fire was contained quickly but she is believed to have died from smoke inhalation.
In a separate incident, police are seeking help identifying a homeless man known only as "Ben" (approx. 63 years old), who died in mid-March at the Park-Klinik Weißensee after being found on the streets of Weißensee. He reportedly lost his wife and children years ago in a traffic accident caused by a drunk truck driver.
A 45-year-old woman was seriously injured in a domestic violence attack at her home on Friesickestraße, where her estranged husband attacked her with kitchen items including a knife. Police have arrested the 50-year-old suspect. A 25-year-old woman lost control of her car at Berliner Allee/Buschallee and crashed into tram barrier railings, sustaining injuries.

Lost Places in Weißensee
Timeframe: Ongoing coverage
A series of reports has highlighted Weißensee's numerous lost places: the former Stasi indoor shooting range on Neumagener Straße, a weapons depot that stored the GDR's explosive legacy, and the VEB Isokond factory site where an insider's warning prevented an environmental catastrophe in the 1980s. The former children's hospital, a lost place for nearly three decades, has been the subject of a long-running political saga over its future use.
A recent feature in the Berliner Zeitung also explored the broader history of Weißensee as a once-visionary planned community: under mayor Carl Woelck (1905–1920), the area was conceived as a model municipality with red-brick architecture by Carl James Bühring, green spaces, and communal buildings. The plan ended with Weißensee's incorporation into Greater Berlin in 1920.
